Minnie McNaughton is a figurative painter based in Cornwall. She is an observational artist who paints what she sees, whether it be, landscape figure or still life. She is particularly interested in working en plein air, inspired by the unique creeks and coastline of her corner of Cornwall. The Fal estuary, the Roseland peninsular and the Cornish north coast are frequent subjects, reflected throughout the seasons.

Within her landscapes she sets out to capture the character of a place, working quickly to pin down the changing moods dictated by tide and weather. ‘’I continually strive to record fleeting moments of nature – the clouds, reflections and shadows – looking for contrast in light and shapes.’’

Colour and light are important in her work and she is faithful to the world as she sees it. This is also true of her studio work seen in her series of floral studies.

In the same way that she aims to catch the essence of a place, she describes the likeness of a person in her portraiture, which she does to commission.

Minnie’s preferred medium is oil although she also works extensively in watercolour.

She trained in Fine Art at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth where she focused on figurative painting.
